Free Crochet Pattern & Review ~ The Granny Heart Square!

Last week I shared an awesome free crochet pattern I found on Ravelry – it was Valentine’s Day and I was in need of a heart to crochet. Having found the beautiful free crochet pattern “The Granny Heart” I fell in love, hooked some up, and then contacted the designer Deborah from Crochet Tea Party! A reader of mine wondered and asked if the Granny Heart could be made into a square – you know, for afghans, throws, blankets, purses, etc. I, again, contacted Deborah, the designer, and she got right on it and sent me the pattern yesterday! I took the three Granny Hearts I’d hooked on Saturday and made them into Granny Heart Squares yesterday, testing her pattern – the results ARE WONDERFUL – in fact, PERFECT, I’d say!

Deborah released her free pattern today on Ravelry – “The Granny Heart Square“! YAY! Featured Designer & Free Pattern Review!

It all started with the listing on Ravelry for this beautiful Granny Heart Free Pattern from Crochet Tea Party. I liked the free pattern so much, I made a few up and then decided to contact the designer, Deborah, thus resulting in today’s post!

Featured Designer Interview Q&A with Deborah from Crochet Tea Party:
Q: Tell us, Deborah, how long have you been crocheting?
A: I have been crocheting for about 12 years, but before that I was an ardent knitter. I love fibre textures, and both crochet and knitting offer this in mounds.

Q: Who taught you how to crochet, Deborah?
A: Although my mother and my grandmother are expert crocheters, I taught myself with a little “How to” book from the local library. This was long before the days of YouTube videos. Crochet just worked/clicked in my head. The logic of the craft is fascinating. Also, crochet work has more immediate feedback than knitting (for me). It grows quickly and can be finished quickly. If there are mistakes, these in most instances by rectified quickly or overlooked or blocked out later.

Q: What inspires you, Deborah, to craft your crochet designs?
A: I love motif crochet. Almost anything that is worked in the round – granny squares, hearts, hats, and especially mandalas. There is almost a beautiful arab-esque quality to working in the round that is rhythmic and creative. Another thing that inspires me is good yarn. When you have a good yarn in your hands, it almost aches to be created/formed into something of beauty. I work a lot with mercerized cotton yarn.

The Granny Heart is a free download on Ravelry, and I promptly downloaded the PDF pattern and went to town making a few Granny Hearts from Crochet Tea Party’s free pattern. For my projects, I used Omega Sinfonia which is a mercerized cotton in sport weight, category 3, along with the suggested hook size of a G/4.00mm. The pattern is well-written, with both written and color chart detailed instructions , easy to follow, resulting in a beautiful Granny Heart! Stay tuned, as Deborah has plans for a square using her Granny Heart, enabling us to make afghans, coasters and well… anything you would use a square for!

I then took out my trusty steam iron, some clean towels and blocked my motifs. Because I used a mercerized cotton yarn (Omega Sinfonia), I knew I could use the iron on high heat and full steam, hovering approximately 2″ over my hearts and not ruin the fabric. If you choose to use an acrylic or synthetic blend yarn, you will want to use the “dry” heat method of blocking and cover your project with a damp towel and use a lower heat setting on your iron, one appropriate for synthetic blends. While the motifs were still warm, I shaped them and let them cool to set, keeping their perfectly blocked shaping.
