A photo of your finished pair of City Girl Boot Cuffs posted at the Crochet Playground Facebook Group and linked to the the Rafflecopter by 10/08/15 will be entered to win the Red Heart Yarn Prize package ($50 Value).
I used Red Heart’s Sparkle Soft and Soft yarns for my model – I absolutely love the feel of the Soft line of yarns Red Heart offers. The yarns work up easily with beautiful results! As an option, I also used Red Heart’s Boutique Fur to trim a pair I made – the Boutique Fur is oh so, so soft and works up easily using a large hook and has such fun results! I would recommend all of the Red Heart yarns I used in this project to all of my crochet friends and family!
This week’s free pattern for week #4 of the 12 Weeks Of Christmas Blog Hop CAL is brought to you by The Hooked Haberdasher – that’s me! The City Girl Boot Cuffs are really fun to make with lovely results – and just a hint… you won’t use all of your yarn; however, you may just want to reserve your leftover yarn for another upcoming project… just sayin’ 😉
City Girl Boot Cuffs Crochet Pattern
Designed by The Hooked Haberdasher
To ensure success with this pattern, please read through entire pattern prior to beginning your project.
Skill Level: Beginner. For this pattern you will need to know how to complete the following stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet and treble crochet.
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn, category 4. Model made with Red Heart Soft and Red Heart Sparkle Soft
- *optional – Red Heart Boutique Fur
- Hook sizes – US I-9/5.5mm & US J-10/6.0mm
- Stitch Marker
- Yarn/tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
ch=chain; CC=coordinating color; hdc=half double crochet; FLO=front loop only; MC=main color; R=round; sc=single crochet; sk=skip; sl st(s)=slip stitch(es); st(s)=stitch(es); tr=treble crochet
Size:
Guided pattern with a 2-3” positive ease
Gauge:
- Band: I hook – 18 sl sts x 20-21 rows = 3.5″ x 3″ with I hook and Red Heart Soft
- Decorative Cuff: J hook – 11-12sts x 5 rows = 3″ x 2.5″ with J hook and Red Heart Soft Sparkle
How to read this pattern:
- When a number precedes the st, that number of sts need to be worked into the st. Example: 2sc = two sc into same st.
- Asterisks indicate to repeat stitches within the ** as instructed.
- Instructions within brackets [ ] are worked into the same st. Example: [tr, sc] = one treble crochet and one single crochet worked into the same stitch.
- Parentheses ( ) at the end of a round = total sts for that round.
Notes:
- Part 1 of the City Girl Boot Cuffs is worked in short rows to the desired length. The turning ch1 does not count as a st.
- For the “knit-look” slip stitches, see my detailed photo tutorial here.
- The mattress stitch seaming method is used to join part 1 into a cuff. See the photo tutorial here.
- Part 2 (Decorative Cuff Edge) of the City Girl Boot Cuffs has an *option to place 1sc or 2sc into each st on R1. Working 1sc into each st on R1, will result in no flare. Placing 2sc in each st will give the cuff more flare at the top, like the model. R2 on is worked in the round in a spiral fashion with no joining. Move your stitch marker up with the new stitch of each new round.
- When making your [tr, sc] from R2 on, place your sts into the sk space from the previous round; this results in a staggered bobble effect. The st to work into is easily recognized by the length of the two top loops; you will work into the “longest” looking loops.
- Unless otherwise instructed and whenever possible, work over your tails as you go along – this will result in less work at the end of your project 🙂
PATTERN: (Make 2)
PART 1 ~ CUFF BAND (Use your I hook)
R1: With main color (MC) ch 19; sl st into 2nd ch from hook and every ch to end; ch1, turn. (18)
R2: sl st FLO each st across; ch1, turn. (18)
R3+: Repeat R2 to desired length, ending with a multiple of 2 (even number of rows) and leaving a long tail for sewing ends together. (18) (* For the medium size, I had 66 rows) Construction: Meet your short ends together. Using your yarn/tapestry needle threaded with your long tail, match your stitches and work a mattress stitch seam catching the unworked loop of your beginning chain and the FLO of your last row. This will result in a near invisible seam.
PART 2 ~ DECORATIVE CUFF EDGE: (Switch to your J hook)
R1: Attach your coordinating color (CC) yarn with a sl st in the st just to the right of your seam.*(See option for 1sc in note section) Ch1, sc same st; work 2sc into each prominent loop along your selvage edge of your band; sl st to 1st sc; Do not turn.
R2: Work 1 tr and 1 sc into the next st, sk the next st; *[tr, sc] into the next st, sk next st*, rep * around to last st; work 1 tr and 1 sc into the last st; do not join, do not turn.
R3: (Work your first tr/sc into the sk 1 space of the previous round – the set of long looking loops) *[tr, sc], sk 1*, rep * around; do not join, do not turn. Use a stitch marker and move up with each row.Continue working in a spiral fashion with no join; repeating R3 to desired decorative edge height and ending with a sl st in the previous round’s sc. Finish off, weave ends. (* I continued working R3 for a total of five rounds. My City Girl Boot Cuffs measured flat 5.5″ x 6”)
Your finished cuffs should look like this. They are reversible! Fold down the decorative cuff edge; flip them inside out and leave them standing tall; add a button for character… but most of all, enjoy your City Girl Boot Cuffs!
*Optional: For a fun furry edge, use your large hook and Red Heart Boutique Fur. Attach yarn with a sl st, and loosely sl st every other st around. Finish off and weave ends.
