Free Pattern ~ Lil’ Bit of Love Hat

Free pattern ~ Lil’ Bit of Love Hat.

This pattern for the wee ones came about for two reasons – TWINS! A dear friend gained “Auntie” status, welcoming twins into the family. As twins will do, they are rather in cahoots as to their arrival date. These two decided to make their appearance a bit early. So, this pattern, simply by changing up your hook size, is intended for the preemie through 3 month average size babies. On December 1, 2015, Sunset Family Living will begin their annual charity event to make hats for those in need. Please consider committing to make this pattern and donating to your local NICUs, Birthing Centers, and Family Services Agencies – ensuring those wee ones noggins are covered this winter with a “Lil’ Bit of Love”…

Lil’ Bit of Love Hat

Designed by The Hooked Haberdasher

Skill Level:  beginner/easy
Materials:

Abbreviations:
ch=chain; hdc=half double crochet; HDCam=half double crochet alternate method; R=round; sc=single crochet; sl st(s)=slip stitch(es); st(s)=stitch(es); yo=yarn over
Size:

  • Preemie 1 (2-4 lbs) = F hook; fits head circumference 8-10”
  • Preemie 2 (5-6 lbs) = G hook; fits head circumference 10-12”
  • Newborn = H hook; fits head circumference 12-14”
  • 0-3 months = I hook; fits head circumference 14-16”

How to read this pattern:

  • When a number precedes the st, that number of sts need to be worked into the st. Example: 1 hdc, 2hdc = half double crochet in next st, two half double crochet into next st.
  • Asterisks indicate to repeat stitches within the ** as instructed.
  • Parentheses ( ) at the end of a round = total sts for that round.

Special Stitches:
Beginning HDC alternate method (HDCam): Ch2, pick up loops from 1st chain, insert hook into next st; yo, and draw through all loops on hook. 1LBOL HDCam

Notes:

  • The hat body is worked in the round (spiral fashion) into the 2nd/3rd loops of the working stitch, which gives the outside of the hat the nice ridged look and the inside of the hat (which lays against baby’s head) a smooth surface. Working in a spiral fashion for the body, there are no joining rounds.
  •  1LBOL 1
  • Place your stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move up with each consecutive round.
  • Hat body increase rounds (R1-8) will always end with an increase in the last st.

PATTERN:

HAT BODY (*Tip: place stitch marker in the first stitch of each new round. )
R1: With main color start with a Magic Circle; hdc 6 into the ring. Pull ring tight. (6)
R2: Work 2hdc into each stitch around. (12)
R3: Work *1 hdc in the next st, 2hdc*, repeat ** around. (18)
R4: Work *1 hdc in next two sts, 2hdc*, repeat ** around. (24)

R5: Work *1 hdc in next three sts, 2hdc*, repeat ** around. (30)
R6: Work *1 hdc in next four sts, 2hdc*, repeat ** around. (36)
R7: Work *1 hdc in the next five sts, 2hdc*, repeat ** around. (42)
R8: Work *1 hdc in the next ten sts, 2hdc* repeat ** three times; 1 hdc in next nine sts. (45)
R10-11: Work 1 hdc in each st around. (45)
R12: Work 1 hdc in each st to last two sts; 1 sc in next, sl st in next. (45) 1LBOL R12
FOLD UP HAT BRIM
R13: Change color to coordinating color with a sl st. Begin with the HDCam (see SPECIAL STITCHES); continue working 1 hdc in each st around, join to top of HDCam with a sl st. (45) 1LBOL HDCjoin
R14-20: Work your first st with a HDCam; 1 hdc in each st around; join to top of HDCam. (45)
R21: Work your first st with a HDCam; 1 hdc in each st around; join to top of HDCam; finish off, weave in tails. (45)
Your hat should look like this after R21. 1LBOL 3

HEART MOTIF
I used the THIS Heart pattern from Skip To My Lou, stopping at the end of R1. Begin and end your heart with long tails to either tie or sew your motif to your hat.

Fold up your brim to the desired height and position your heart, tie or sew into place with your tapestry/yarn needle. Add a pom-pom for more fun!
